“Fairness is not giving everyone the same thing.
Fairness is giving each person what they need to
succeed.” Our Adaptive Sports & Recreation program is an
inclusive program with modifications to meet the
needs of all participants. We have extra coaches,
take extra time, & modify for special sensitivities.
A love for sports & playing should never be
limited to your abilities.
NYA is committed to providing an environment where anyone can participate and experience the joy of sports, no matter their ability. Adaptive Sports & Recreation is an inclusive program with modifications to meet the needs of all its participants. We have extra coaches, take extra time, and adjust for special sensitivities. Our dedicated staff and volunteers bring big smiles and big hearts each week to deliver a best-in-class sports experience for these young athletes.
New for the 2021/2022 school year, Adaptive Sports & Recreation will transition to a seasonal sport format – Fall/Soccer and Winter/Basketball, to familiarize young athletes with structure of the Unified Sports program which becomes available to students in Middle School and High School. Also, thanks to our generous 2021 NYA Donors, we will be bringing the I Can Bike program in Summer 2022. I Can Bike is an immersive 1-week program where participants will receive instruction on riding bikes. Transportation from Newtown Public Schools to the NYA will be available for participants during the school year.

A message from our team
Adaptive Sports & Recreation at NYA is here for you and your child! NYA Sports & Fitness, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is committed to building a stronger community by providing an environment that supports healthy living though exercise, sports, play, events, and personal connections. At NYA, we believe in inclusivity and providing a safe space where everyone regardless of capabilities can and will be successful. Diversity is being invited to the game, but inclusivity is being asked to play.
Our program is designed to offer families of children, with various levels of capability, an opportunity to participate in recreation according to their ability. Participants join us each week while our dedicated team works diligently to adapt the activity of the day, accordingly. We pride ourselves in getting to know each participant and their families, as well as, specific needs to ensure everyone feels supported and is successful. We welcome families, not just in Newtown but from neighboring communities as well, and we always welcome siblings!
Adaptive Sports & Recreation is offered at least three times a year for six 75-minute sessions and is overseen by two NYA Directors and supported by adult volunteers and high school volunteers, most of whom are involved in middle and high school Best Buddies programs and Unified Sports. Do not be discouraged if you have not been successful in finding the right place for your family. Give us a try and we will make every effort to meet your needs!
If you have any questions or concerns, please call us directly so we can help put your mind at ease.
